The Mountains of the Spanish Ibex

 

Our region is not only plains and crops. In Albacete we can find mountains of over 2,000 meters, canyons and large forest areas. The home of the ibex, griffon vultures, Bearded Vultures, endemic plants and reptiles, ancestral traditions and life style. Because of the breathtaking mountain scenery, the isolation of the area and the low population density, are "La Mancha Himalayas".

 

 

Sierra del Segura it´s neighbour of the most famous Andalusian "Sierra de Cazorla". As it´s Andalusian sister, in Sierra del Segura the tourist can find awesome mountain landscapes for  birdwatching, trekking, mountaineering and visiting natural protected areas.

 

Description:

 

One weekend trip for the observation of the most wanted bird species and wild fauna of Sierra del Segura, trekking, visits to the main protected areas as Nacimiento del Río Mundo "The largest waterfall in southern Spain". Our customers also will have the opportunity to meet some of the most isolated villages in Spain its people and the rich gastronomy or the area, one of the most wildest and beautiful corners of Castilla-La Mancha region.

The service includes transportation in a five seat Mercedes Vito van, accommodation and optics equipment.

The excursions will be guided by experienced AMBIENTEA guides with the advice and permits of Castilla-La Mancha Environment Department and rangers.

Daily program:

 

Saturday:

08:00 We will pick up our clients at Albacete Train Station or at your hotel.

 

10:30 Arrival to Nacimiento del Río Mundo Waterfall

 Until lunch time we will have time to walk around the waterfall and river Mundo shores to see some endemic carnivorous plants and look for Valverde´s Lizard an endemic reptil easy to see in that place.

 

12:30 Lunch break on the field

 

13:30 After lunch we will return to our van trip. We will cross all the Mountain Range until get our next destination Sierra de las Cabras Natural Reserve, the highest mountain in the area. On the way to Sierra de las Cabras we will stop in several scenic lookouts.

 

15:00 We will arrive to our accommodation in Nerpio, elected in 2016 as the prettiest village in Castilla-La Mancha. We will have time for resting for a while, eat something and/or walk by Nerpio old town.

 

18:00 Before dusk we will start the climbing to Mingarnao´s Vultures Observatory. We will have the opportunity to see dozens of vultures soaring to their perches during sunset.

 

20:00 Dinner at our accommodation and time for a night walk by Nerpio streets.

 

Sunday:

08:00 We will wake up early to visit Sierra de las Cabras Natural Reserve. On the way to Sierra de las Cabras, we will stop at several sites for the purpose of observing the landscape and several items of historical and natural interest as Taibilla Castle and ancient walnut trees. In this place we will have the chance to see the first Spanish Ibex of the day.

 

09:30-10:00 We will start a trekking route in the surroundings of Sierra de las Cabras Natural Reserve. If the group is used to walking trails, the route could include climbing to the top. We will spend all the day walking and watching plants and fauna in the Natural Reserve. We will have for lunch a picnic on the field.

 

17:00 Back to our accommodation to pick up our luggage, dinner and back to Albacete.
